How Do I Know Which Battery To Get?

There are heaps of battery options for solar systems these days. Most commonly, you might have a 5 – 8kW solar system already and you want to add one of the many solar battery systems out there. Well in this case, you just need to check a couple of things:

• What type of inverter do you have – do you need to change it, or get an additional inverter?
• How much energy are you ‘exporting’ to the grid (look at your power bill)

Do I need a new inverter?

In some cases, you can add the battery straight onto your existing system – but it’s a good idea to check your inverter will be compatible with the battery.

Do I have enough solar panels for my new solar battery system?

Look on your power bill – check how many kWh were given a ‘solar credit’ or ‘solar exported’. Then check how many days that applies for.

EXAMPLE

John has a power bill of $463.

He checks on his bill and has a ‘solar credit’ of $88.67 and this was for 1,108kWh . The bill is for 89 days.

So he takes 1,108 divided by 89 = 12.45 kWh/day

This means that on average, each day he is exporting 12.45 kWh – perfect for one of our 10kWh (or a little more) solar battery systems!
